Coogee Bay DNA sample could be from either sex
DNA contained in a sample tested as part of an investigation into a faeces contamination incident at a well-known Sydney hotel could be from a person of either sex, experts say.
Sydney couple Steve and Jessica Whyte claimed they were served a free ice-cream sundae containing faeces at a NRL Grand Final function at the Coogee Bay Hotel on October 5.
Police on Wednesday said investigators had received a number of additional documents from the Food Authority related to the case and a review was ongoing.
It has been reported that the sample contains a woman's DNA, but a spokesman for NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald says laboratory tests have proved inconclusive.
"The information given from the lab is it could belong to one in 59 people," the spokesman said.
"It's partial female DNA but it's also shared by some men."
Police and the NSW Food Authority were called in to investigate the contamination, while the hotel has hired a team of former police officers to conduct its own inquiry.
After a day-long mediation session last month, the couple and the hotel released a joint statement which said both parties regretted the distress the incident had caused.
The statement cleared the Whytes of any involvement in the contamination.
Neither side would divulge any details of payments.
