Recapping today’s headlines

By Latika Bourke

Good evening and thanks for reading our live coverage. Here is a summary of today’s headlines:

  • Prime Minister Scott Morrison has hit back at Emmanuel Macron, accusing the French President of making “slurs” against Australia. The President said that while he respected the people of Australia, Mr Morrison had lied to him over the breaking of the contract for France to build Australia’s submarines.

  • Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson has opened the UN climate summit, warning the world’s leaders that they have “one minute until midnight” left to avert catastrophic climate change.

COP must mark the beginning of the end of climate change: Johnson

By Latika Bourke

British PM Boris Johnson said this conference must mark the beginning of the end of climate change in his opening speech to COP26.

He said there would be “bitterness and resentment” from younger generations if leaders failed to act on climate change at these talks.

Johnson said while COP26 would not be the last of the summits, this must be the “beginning of the end” of climate change.

He said while leaders did not look like James Bond, this must be the moment when leaders started to “defuse the bomb” that he earlier metaphorically likened to a doomsday scenario for the world.

“Good luck to all of us,” he said, as he finished his opening speech.

‘Blah, blah, blah’: Boris Johnson opens UN summit channelling Greta

By Latika Bourke

Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson has opened the UN climate summit in Glasgow, following a bagpipe performance and a poetry recitation.

He reprised the words of teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, who described the words of world leaders who aren’t committing to climate action as “blah, blah, blah”.

Addressing an audience that includes US President Joe Biden, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sir David Attenborough, Johnson said the world is facing a James Bond-like doomsday scenario where the clock is ticking down on life as we know it.

“The longer we fail to act the worse it gets and the higher the price when we are eventually forced by catastrophe to act,” he said.

Biden arrives, talks can begin

US President Joe Biden has arrived at the COP talks in Glasgow, 15 minutes after the opening speeches were due to begin.

The President was the last world leader to arrive. He wore a black face mask once inside the conference hall.

Earlier, Prince Charles, who says this summit is the world’s “last-chance saloon” to avert catastrophic global warming, arrived with wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Modi, Biden among final leaders to arrive at climate talks

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of the last leaders to arrive at the UN climate talks venue with just minutes to go until the opening ceremony.

While most leaders have walked onto the stage and shared a jovial fist or elbow bump with host leader, Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Modi embraced both men for a quick group hug and chatted to the pair for a few minutes before posing for an official photograph.

Modi’s contribution to these talks is key. He is the sole leader of a BRIC’s nation attending and is yet to produce his government’s climate commitment.

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall have also just arrived. President Biden could be the final leader to arrive.

Huge queues at climate conference venue

By Latika Bourke

Enormous and chaotic queues have formed to get into the venue, the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), where the UN talks are being held.

Our Europe correspondent Bevan Shields is one of the thousands trying to get in through a single access point and just sent me this photograph of the scene.

For its part, the SEC said it was “honoured to have been identified as the location for this globally significant conference”.

Morrison presser ends, not a question on climate

By Latika Bourke

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has wrapped up his press conference in Glasgow, Scotland, where he will attend the UN climate talks.

His address, which lasted around 30 minutes, was held at the BAE shipyards where the Type 26 frigates Australia has purchased are being built.

Interestingly, there was not a single comment from Morrison on climate change as the entire conference was devoted to responding to Macron’s comments in which the French President said the Prime Minister had lied to him about breaking the subs deal.
