Colette, The Daily Edited brands exit administration, 40 stores to stay open

By Jessica Yun

Colette by Colette Hayman and personalised leather goods brand The Daily Edited will exit voluntary administration and continue trading.

The two brands, which were purchased by former Myer boss Bernie Brookes’ Marquee Retail Group in 2020 and 2022, appointed Mackay Goodwin as administrators in early April.

The business will execute a deed of company arrangement that will see all 40 stores continue to trade and 400 jobs saved.

“Fewer than 10” jobs were made redundant, according to Brookes. “The entire MRG team showed remarkable resilience during this difficult period, and their efforts, along with the patience of suppliers and landlords are greatly appreciated.”

All gift cards issued before administration will be honoured.

Dutton vows gas ramp up, praises Frydenberg’s priorities

By

In Melbourne to address the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton vowed to ramp up domestic gas production to bring prices down, as an immediate energy supply fix while working on the longer term nuclear power plant strategy.

In a doorstop in Camberwell alongside the home affairs spokesman James Patterson and Kooyong Liberal candidate Amelia Hamer, Dutton noted that her putative rival, former treasurer and local member Josh Frydenberg “had a chance to run for preselection, he chose not to do that. He’s prioritised his career and his family – and that’s to his credit” and praised Hamer.

“She’s demonstrated that she will stand up to anyone if it means fighting for her community and representing this community in the Federal Parliament.”

Dutton did not rule out support for reopening preselection for the seat of Chisholm to allow ex-Higgins MP Katie Allen to contest it now that her former seat will be abolished when the Australian Electoral Commission redraws the boundaries for the next election.

“It’s a decision for the Party here in Victoria. Generally in circumstances where a seat has been abolished and a good part of that seat has gone into the adjoining seat, in this case, Chisholm, then the admin committee would look at whether they reopen that preselection or not.”

ABC breached standards over horse cull coverage: ombudsman

By Caitlin Fitzsimmons

The ABC has been rapped over the knuckles for inaccuracy and lack of impartiality in news reports about the aerial culling of feral horses in Kosciuszko National Park.

The ABC Ombudsman upheld complaints including one from the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and one from the Invasive Species Council that the public broadcaster had breached its editorial standards in its reporting on the issue in three news bulletins on April 8.

The reports by journalist Jamelle Wells included unsubstantiated claims from Nationals MP Wes Fang that the government’s estimate of between 12,797 and 21,760 wild horses in the park was wrong and it was only “at or below 3000”.

The news reports also claimed horses were being shot up to 18 times, injured horses could take days to die and there had been orphaned foals discovered in the park.v

Elderly home care wait times worsen

By

Elderly Australians in need of home care support are facing wait times of up to nine months and the situation is only expected to worsen.

The federal government is being urged to address the delays with the number of those in limbo more than doubling to 68,109 over the past 12 months.

A Senate budget estimates hearing on Thursday also revealed those already receiving support are waiting for extra help as their circumstances change.

“We have seen a deterioration of access, particularly in the last six months,” the Department of Health and Aged Care’s Russell Herald said.

The federal government’s home care package provides support for Australians with showering, cleaning, cooking and other basic needs.

Murdoch stood down as chairman of both companies in November, with his elder son and Sydney resident Lachlan Murdoch taking over, bringing an end to a drawn-out succession battle.
