NSW COVID restrictions: What are the rules across the state?

By Jamie Berry and Andrew Taylor

NSW entered a snap statewide lockdown at 5pm on Saturday after recording 466 new cases of COVID-19, which continues to spread across the regions.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro took to Twitter on Saturday afternoon to say the stay-at-home orders would be introduced for all of regional NSW to “minimise movement and protect our communities from the evolving COVID situation in Sydney”.

Mr Barilaro used an online call on Saturday afternoon to tell regional NSW MPs that the entire state would be in lockdown for at least seven days, an MP unauthorised to speak on the issue told the Herald.

So with more than 8 million people now in lockdown for a week, what does it all mean?

COVID-19 traces found in Hawkesbury River area

By Roy Ward

NSW Health has detected COVID-19 traces in wastewater samples from the Hawkesbury River area.

The detections were made at the Parkes and Brooklyn sewage treatment plants.

Parkes serves about 11,600 people and Brooklyn serves about 1200 people and includes the suburbs of Dangar Island, Cowan, Brooklyn, Mooney Mooney and Cheerio Point.

NSW Health said there were no known cases in those areas so anyone with the slightest symptoms should seek out a COVID-19 test and isolate until receiving a negative result.

A number of locations in Dubbo have been listed as close contact areas with anyone at the venues during the specified times needing to get a COVID-19 test immediately and quarantine for 14 days.

Construction of Mickleham quarantine camp is under way

By Tom Cowie

Construction is under way at Melbourne’s Centre for National Resilience – the unwieldy name given to the new quarantine facility in Mickleham – with the camp set to open by the end of the year.

A community engagement session was held earlier this week on progress of the fast-tracked 1000-bed accommodation site for returning travellers, however residents were told that builders would not be delayed by any consultation process.

‘Can you please do your job?’: Births, Deaths and Marriages registry complaints jump

By Rachael Dexter

There’s one key problem stopping Will Richardson from moving out of home, getting a new job and getting on with his adult life – the 19-year-old can’t get a copy of his birth certificate.

For over a year the university student from Wallan has been waiting for the document from the Victorian Births, Deaths and Marriages registry. The taxpayer-funded office shut its doors and closed its phone lines to the public in 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic took hold.

Will Richardson, 19, and his mother, Charlotte Robinson, have been trying to get a replacement birth certificate for him for over a year. Jason South

Without it, Mr Richardson, who lives with autism, can’t move forward.

By Roy Ward

Victoria has downgraded south-east Queensland from a red zone to an orange zone which should make it easier for residents to return to the state.

The 11 LGAs are: City of Brisbane, Moreton Bay Regional Council, City of Gold Coast, City of Ipswich, Lockyer Valley Regional Council, Logan City, Noosa Shire Council, Redland City, Scenic Rim Regional Council, Somerset Regional Council and Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

Carlton, Glenroy-Broadmeadows, the Sunshine West industrial area, Camberwell and the Truganina-Williams Landing areas in Melbourne all showed positive detections and while some of those suburbs already have COVID-19 cases, the chief health officer’s update on Saturday night said the detections were from parts of those suburbs without cases.

The Carlton wastewater detection was identified as coming from a public housing estate with health officials contacting residents directly and CoHealth setting up onsite testing at the estate.

Queensland tightens border zone with NSW

By Roy Ward

Residents in the New South Wales/Queensland border zone will face more restrictions on travelling into Queensland.

From 8pm tonight NSW residents within the border zone can only enter Queensland for essential services, essential work and to shop for essentials that can’t be reasonably obtained on the NSW side.
