Beveridge launches post-match tirade at journalist

By Roy Ward

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has hit out at Fox Footy journalist Tom Morris in his post-match press conference.

Morris broke a story this week that Lachie Hunter was expected to miss tonight’s match. Hunter was named medical sub on the night and then brought into the starting 22 minutes before the game after Jason Johannisen hurt his leg during warm-up.

When Morris asked Beveridge about the player changes and whether that was a deliberate ploy, Beveridge questioned why Morris was at the press conference and went on the attack.

“You have the nerve to ask a question and to even be here?” Beveridge said.

“You’ve been preying on us the last two times [we played Melbourne]. You barrack for Melbourne, Tom Morris. You have been opening us up and causing turmoil within our football club by declaring our team before it needs to be declared.

“Is that the way Fox want you to operate? Is that the gutter journalist you want to be? Is that who you want to be?

“We had a plan. We had some late stuff with ‘JJ’ [Johannisen] that came out of warm-ups but everything else went to plan from Sunday, which somehow you found out about again. We need to put our hand up and say there is some leakage from our football club, but you are preying on it. Your conflict of interest here is considerable and yet your gutter journalism is killing us behind the scenes.

“This is why the health and wellbeing of the people is caught up in all this stuff.

“Are you proud of yourself?”

Morris responded “Fox backs me” and that he was proud of his work. Beveridge cut him off and said Morris wasn’t welcome at his press conferences, to which Morris responded that it was an AFL press conference that he was allowed to attend.

“Have you got enough, boys and girls?” Beveridge asked the journalists trying to end the press conference.

“I think we are probably done, aren’t we?”

Wasn’t it grand? Melbourne and football back home at the MCG

By Greg Baum

So where were we? Oh, that’s right. We were back there. In Melbourne, saluting Melbourne, fearing Melbourne, perhaps secretly admiring Melbourne.

And wasn’t it grand?

Footy was back in several dimensions at the MCG on Wednesday night. It was back at the ’G, before a crowd, a properly partisan crowd. It was back to where we were two years ago, before the great black curtain came down. Autumn was with us, but there was a spring in every step. Check-in was a minor inconvenience after so long checked out.

Beveridge let emotions get to him: Buckley

By Roy Ward

Former Collingwood coach turned Fox Footy commentator Nathan Buckley believes Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge let his emotions get the best of him in his post-match outburst towards Fox Footy journalist Tom Morris.

Beveridge hit out at Morris for his reporting on Bulldogs team selection and told the journalist he wasn’t welcome at his press conference. Morris defended his story and asserted his right to be there.

Buckley said he preferred post-game stories came from what happened in the match, but Beveridge would have to deal with the issue for days to come, perhaps longer.

“I like the stories to come from the grass, from what happens on that side of the white line,” Buckley said on Fox Footy after the press conference.

Goodwin says Lever didn’t ‘do a Rob Harvey’

By Roy Ward

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin says defender Jake Lever didn’t “do a Rob Harvey” and deliberately tear his plantar fascia.

Lever was a late withdrawal and Goodwin said he hoped the premiership defender could play in round two but would be guided by doctors.

He also said Lever didn’t follow St Kilda great Harvey, who reportedly jumped off a bench in an attempt to snap his plantar fascia so he could be fit for a finals campaign.

The Demons coach laughed when reminded of Harvey’s move, which became part of football legend.

Goodwin hopes Salem injury isn’t serious

By Roy Ward

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin hopes Christian Salem will only miss a few weeks with his knee injury.

Salem hurt his knee in the first quarter and was on crutches after the game.

Lever was ruled out after tearing his plantar fascia at training last Sunday. The injury has troubled him for over a month and doesn’t begin healing until it is torn.

“Salem will have scans tomorrow. We will wait and see on that, but we hope it’s not the worst possible news and he might miss a few weeks. But first indications are that it’s not looking too bad,” Goodwin said.

Dees weather Dogs’ charge to start flag defence in style

By Andrew Wu

Melbourne marked the unfurling of their first flag in 57 years with a performance that had their faithful daring to dream of another, as the Western Bulldogs’ quest for redemption hit a major snag on the opening night of the season.

In a game of fiendish momentum swings not dissimilar to last year’s grand final, the Demons offered their rivals a hint on how they can be dethroned this year while also showing how difficult they will be to beat in their 26-point win.

The Bulldogs’ woes were compounded by an ankle problem to skipper Marcus Bontempelli while the Dees’ victory may also come at a cost – star defender Christian Salem suffered what appeared to be a left knee injury.

More than 58,000 people attended tonight’s game

By Cassandra Morgan

Tonight’s season opener drew a crowd of 58,002 people, the MCG has confirmed.

The AFL was hoping the first full-capacity fixture at the ground since 2019 could attract about 80,000 people, with predictions later scaled down to about 70,000 fans.

Last year’s Anzac Day match at the MCG drew in 78,113 people.

‘A pretty amazing night’: Petracca hails fans as Demons win season-opener

By

Christian Petracca spoke to Channel Seven after the game:

On the win:

“It was a pretty amazing night. The unfurling of the flag, seeing our past players who mean so much to us. Look at the crowd. It’s just so amazing to see Melbourne, Melburnians back at the ’G and living their normal lives.

“About the game, pretty similar to the grand final. We started well, knew they would come back. There was a lot of momentum. I thought our backs were unbelievable, the ability to get the ball out of there.

“You know, they’re a great team and they’re going to be up there this year.”

By

Melbourne Demons were tested but the 2021 premiers rose to the challenge to beat the Western Bulldogs by 26 points at the MCG.

The Dogs were powering away with the game in 12 minutes into the second term after kicking eight-straight goals but they didn’t kick another major until the last term as the Demons took hold of the game and made sure of the victory in the last term.
