The beauty of baby steps

Sometime around 6am, Nicholas was awoken by Ella breastfeeding Ayva in their bed.

On autopilot, he rose, dressed, secured a baby carrier to his chest, then reclined again.

When Ella nudged him, he scooped up the baby, swooned at the woozy, warm weight of her, and left Ella to it.

Soon they were strolling the streets and Ayva, facing forward, babbled and pointed at dogs on leads.

Nicholas kissed her scalp and caressed her tiny dangling feet and wondered if he’d ever been happier. Then a passing woman in workout gear gave him a gorgeous smile to remove any doubt.
