Splashing out

They were having dinner when Joe took up his knife and tapped his glass. “I’ve an announcement,” he said.

“What is it, love?” asked Sonya, his wife.

“Yeah, Dad, spit it out,” Dylan said.

Joe addressed the kids: “Dylan, Ebony, what would make you unbelievably happy?”

“You and Mum divorcing and us getting a new dad,” Ebony said.

“Ha, ha. Guess again.”

The kids furrowed their brows.

“Are we getting a pool?” Dylan asked tentatively.

“We’re getting a pool?!” Ebony bellowed.

“No,” said Joe, “better than that.” He pointed towards the house next door. “The Bakers are getting a pool!”
