When Eleanor questioned whether he really needed another drink, Michael made a point of opening the can in front of her.

“Ah, refreshing,” he said, taking a big swig.

“Well, isn’t Daddy very mature?” she said, gesturing to James and Daisy who, seated at the kitchen bench, sensed the change in atmosphere and knew better than to answer.

Infuriated, Michael drained the can in four pelican gulps before crushing it in his hand.

“Happy now?” Eleanor asked.

“Ecstatic!” he answered.

They both stood frozen in place, the kitchen silent but for the low hum of the fridge.
