A single-storey red brick bungalow renovated into a P&O-style family home

Reflecting the creative vibe of its owners, this P&O-style home is filled with sinuous curves and retro character.

The house
Once a two-bedroom, inter-war bungalow in inner Sydney’s Tempe, the home has been re-imagined in a style inspired by the streamlined design of 1930s ocean liners.

Who lives here
Restaurateur Ben Milgate, photographer Caroline McCredie, their children Frankie, 16, Clementine, 15, and Mac, 7, and dogs Ruby and Winnie.

What we did
“Needing more space, we envisaged a two-storey home that reflected our love for the P&O style outside while honouring the original art deco features inside,” says Milgate. “Our friends – builder Sam from Green Anvil and designer Matt from Killing Matt Woods – helped bring our vision to life.”

Favourite room
“The dining room – with its banquette seating and large granite table – is perfect for hosting dinner parties and enjoying morning coffee,” says McCredie.

The ’hood
“There are lots of young families like us in the Tempe area,” says McCredie. “Parks and the Cooks River are nearby, and the city is only 12 minutes away by train.”

Future plans
“To build a large shelving unit up to the picture rail, and a built-in day bed under the window,” says Milgate.

Best advice
“Vintage pieces are often better crafted than new ones, have stood the test of time, and add character,” says McCredie.
