A haven for celebrities: Why this resort remains one of our most prestigious check-ins

“Grazie mille!” I exclaim as I’m presented with a plate of cured hiramasa kingfish. Given that I’m overlooking the gently lapping waters of the Coral Sea, my “parli Italiano” might seem at odds with my location, but our Italian waiter has just poured delectable fiano that took my partner and me on a mental trip back to a recent holiday spent exercising our tastebuds around Puglia.

Musing on the delicious fish (and the wine), I lean back in my chair, savouring the moment. I smile and then, just when I think the moment can’t get any more perfect, my partner cries out, “Shark!” Sure enough, on the shoreline two reef sharks are visible basking in the shallows.

A mere two days earlier I’d been swimming in emails and deadlines, and now I’m deep in the serenity of Qualia. Instead of to-do lists, my schedule involves doing not much.

Nestled on the edge of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, Hamilton Island has long been the most popular getaway in the Whitsundays, and Qualia is the pinnacle of its accommodation. Since opening its doors in 2007, the boutique resort, with its collection of stylised pavilion accommodation, has been a byword for opulence, building a reputation as Australia’s most luxurious check-in. Little wonder this Instagram-worthy slice of paradise has won the approval of international and homegrown A-listers, including Oprah, Taylor Swift, Chris Hemsworth and Cate Blanchett.

But you don’t need to be a celebrity to feel like one. At Qualia, everyone gets the red-carpet treatment from the moment they touch down at Hamilton Island’s airport. The resort has a dedicated arrivals desk, so there’s no queuing or collecting your own luggage. Instead, it’s all iced face towels and chauffeured transfers.

Ensconced in our own luxurious pavilion suite and equipped with our own golf buggy, we spend our days zipping between two gorgeous infinity pools which, thanks to Qualia’s strict adults-only policy, are free of the usual noise and dive-bombing at resort pools.

Punctuating hazy, lazy days spent poolside or idling on the resort’s private beach are a wealth of water activities, included in the room rate. Then there’s the award-winning spa, where holistic therapies await. Top tip: the Awakening Temple Treatment, which focuses on the head, neck, shoulders and feet, is particularly swoon-worthy.

For dining, the Long Pavilion serves breezy à la carte breakfasts and relaxed dinners, but the jewel in Qualia’s culinary crown is the degustation dinner at Pebble Beach. Curated by executive chef Jeremy Fenech, the show-stopping Australia-meets-Asia tasting menu changes seasonally and
is complemented by premium wines.

Sunsets in the Whitsundays are legendary – and at Qualia you can take in the magical evening display aboard the resort’s private yacht, an add-on available to any guest. We’re particularly keen as our stay neatly coincides with a glut of whale sightings.

As golden hour takes hold, I gaze across the ocean where the sun’s honeyed rays have created a gorgeous glitter across the surface. And then, as if on cue, a mother whale and her calf breach in front of me, perfectly framed in the fading light.
