Bec Judd 2.0, birds and baby bumps: The Brownlow red carpet

The Brownlow Medal red carpet was filled with moments of unbridled joy, offering some winning looks and quite a few that hit the post. Here is the team that had us cheering.

Dee Salmin – Heart of glass

A crude social media remark about Collingwood player Darcy Moore’s girlfriend, Triple J radio presenter Dee Salmin – “Darcy has money, fame and elite football skills, yet traded his gonads to a feminist witch” – became the inspiration for an upcycled look.

“It makes me look like a sexy sea witch,” Salmin says. “I’m leaning into the comments.”

The gown is made from pieces of recycled sea glass, collected along the Flinders foreshore on the Mornington Peninsula. It took 800 hours for the staff at new label Atalie Studios to assemble the pieces. Darcy’s brooch co-ordinated with the upcycled endeavour.

“I’m being true to myself on the red carpet … This is a piece of art that reflects my passions.”

Content creator Elle Erifilli Rayias did her homework before hitting the red carpet in an Oglia Loro gown.

The red gown, which plunges front and back, is textbook Brownlow, borrowing a page and neckline from Rebecca Judd’s iconic Ruth Tarvydas dress, worn to the 2004 ceremony.

Rayias, known as Elle Ray on social media, worked with veteran Brownlow stylist Lana Wilkinson on the look.

Tiffany Mills – Baby it’s you

This year’s Brownlow may just be the most lavish impromptu baby shower ever, with Tiffany Mills, the wife of Sydney Swans captain Callum Mills, announcing her pregnancy on the red carpet.

The baby is expected in early March.

“We really wanted to accentuate the bump and have it feel really sleek and elegant,” says Mills.

Tiffany turned to Melbourne label Viktoria & Woods for the Brownlow/baby announcement. The outfit consisted of a cape top in blue silk georgette with a matching bodysuit and silk satin bias-cut skirt with dyed lace details.

Mills also stepped out in high heels, which will stay on high rotation until March.

“I love heels, so as long as I feel good, I’ll keep them up!”

Charli Wheeler – She’s got pluck

Model Charli Wheeler was ready for take-off on the arm of Gold Coast Suns captain Noah Anderson.

Wheeler’s dove-grey gown may have been aiming for Grey Swan as inspiration but has a pleasing touch of the pigeon about it, with a plunging neckline and exaggerated hip details.

The striking dress is also from new label Atalie Studios, which is launching into the public eye by dressing a number of guests this evening.

The black clutch brings the ensemble down to earth. Next time, we suggest following the lead of Carrie Bradshaw in And Just Like That… and carrying JW Anderson’s pigeon clutch.
