95 per cent in Maths, for an entire school

By

There is no stopping that Carlingford behemoth.

Not satisfied with taking out the overall top spot by more than 10 per cent, James Ruse graduates romped home in across three maths subjects, achieving Band 6 scores in a whopping 95 per cent of exams, Inga Ting's data pursuit has found.

Selective schools have taken out the top five places in the school rankings for higher-level maths.

North Sydney Boys has come in second, with Band 6 scores in nearly 84 per cent of Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 exams. Sydney Boys is in third place, with Band 6 scores in just over 75 per cent of exams.

Ascham takes out General Maths

By

Inga Ting has dived back into the data to pull out this piece of good news for Ascham.

The Edgecliff school is top of the pops in General Maths.

Four selective schools and 16 non-government schools have made the top 20, with selective school Hurlstone Agricultural and independent girls school Frensham, in the Southern Highlands, coming in second and third place.

No comprehensive schools made the top 20 for Mathematics General 2 this year.

Hold onto your protractors because the results for Advanced Maths, Extension 1 and Extension 2 are up next.

Young guns ace accelerated exams

By

While most students receiving their HSC results today will be breathing a sigh of relief, spare a thought for those young guns with the bulk of their exams left to go.

Parunithan Ranganathan and Chris Zeng are both year 10 students who topped the state in their accelerated courses.

While their Tamil Continuers and Information Processes and Technology exams might be behind them, there is no chance to relax with two more years of high school education ahead of them.

Aidin Karahasan is another state-topping accelerated student.

Joining three other students to hold the Mathematics mantle, Aidin has just completed year 11 and still has the rest of his HSC to tackle next year.

Menai High comes fourth in English

By Inga Ting

Comprehensive co-ed school Menai High has beaten the majority of independent schools and all but two of the state's selective schools to come fourth on the higher-level English merit list.

The only other comprehensive school to make the top 20 for English (Advanced), Extension 1 and Extension 2 is Northern Beaches Secondary - Balgowlah Boys, which has finished in 15th place.

Sydney Girls tops the higher-level English rankings this year, with their students scoring Band 6 (90 or above) in more than 70 per cent of their English exams.

James Ruse is second place, with students achieving a Band 6 score in nearly 64 per cent of exams.

Abbotsleigh rounds out the top three, with a high score rate of 61 per cent.

Overseas HSC students to find out results

By

While many HSC students have already received their results at home, those who took it in locations as diverse as Baghdad, Tehran, and Buenos Aires, will likely find out their scores when they wake up later today.

I chatted to one of them, elite Australian basketballer Myles Cherry, before he dove into his HSC exams in the US state of Conneticut.

Record number of HSC graduates

By Samuel Roberts

NSW Board of Studies President Tom Alegounarias has declared that "more students than ever have completed the HSC credential."

76,000 students received their HSC results on Wednesday morning, with the number achieving a top band result remaining stable at 10%.

Of those students, 1,300 were rewarded a 'band 6' result across five subjects.

"That is a remarkable achievement," said Mr Alegounarias.

The HSC results have also revealed that there has been a 20% increase in the number of students undertaking science courses for their final exams.
