Seven big takeaways from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement

Heartbreak has turned her into the most powerful pop star on the planet, but Taylor Swift finally has her happy ever after. The 35-year-old announced her engagement to Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce on Instagram in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” the couple captioned a joint post on Instagram, adding a dynamite emoji and a snippet of Swift’s song, So High School.

The Instagram announcement, which will no doubt become one of the platform’s most-liked posts ever (although it hit 20 million in a matter of hours, that record is held by Lionel Messi’s 2022 post of him holding the 2022 FIFA World Cup – 74 million likes), was accompanied by a series of photos documenting the couple’s engagement.

In the first photo, Kelce is shown on bent knee in front of Swift, who is wearing a striped dress and standing under an elaborate floral arch. Another photo shows Swift sporting a large diamond ring.

News of the engagement follows Swift’s recent reveal that her next album, The Life of a Showgirl, will be released in October. Swift surprised fans by announcing the arrival of the record on the New Heights podcast, hosted by Kelce and his brother Jason.

The pair’s origin story began between Swift’s Eras Tour shows at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Chiefs, in Kansas City in July 2023. On July 8, Kelce attended the show wearing a friendship bracelet – a signature of any Swift event – he had made with his phone number on it.

The romantic gesture seemed to work; a few months later in September 2023, Swift was spotted sitting in a suite with Kelce’s mother, Donna, at one of his football matches.

Since then, they have become a pop culture power couple. While Kelce is a three-time Super Bowl winner, his profile has skyrocketed off the back of their relationship. Now, with a new album on the horizon, a wedding to plan and the NFL season just around the corner, Swift and Kelce seem to have it all figured out.

When did they actually get engaged?

A fortnight ago, according to Travis’ father, Ed Kelce. In an interview with News5 Cleveland, he said, “Travis actually did the proposal, oh, maybe two weeks, not quite two weeks ago, he was going to put it off until this week. I think she was getting maybe a little antsy. And I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event ... when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you.”

According to Ed Kelce, Travis popped the question at a garden in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

How much is Taylor’s engagement ring worth?

Swift and Kelce’s announcement featured a close-up shot of the singer’s engagement ring, which the USA TODAY Network confirmed was created by Kindred Lubeck with Artifex Fine Jewelry.

The ring’s price is yet to be disclosed, but rings on Lubeck’s online shop, Artifex Fine Jewelry, start at $US4300 ($6621) and go up to $US38,300 ($58,978). It’s an old mine brilliant cut, with a gold band that matched the Cartier watch Swift also wore in the photos.

Gemologist Benjamin Khordipour told Brides that Swift “was proposed to with a stunning elongated antique cushion-cut diamond that is approximately eight carats, F colour, and VS1 clarity”.

As for how much Kelce might’ve paid for the privilege to propose to Swift? Well, it’s hard to say.

But in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Frank Everett, vice chairman for jewellery at auction house Sotheby’s, said: “If you’re looking at a 10-carat diamond with outstanding colour and clarity, that could be a million-dollar stone.”

What was she wearing?

For her big reveal, Swift was clad in a $398 Ralph Lauren striped, silk-blend dress in cream and black, USA Today reported, which has since sold out on the fashion brand’s website. Kelce was a little more low-key and donned a black polo shirt and white pants for the occasion.

And what about those flowers?

Setting a romantic scene like this one does not come cheap. Washington florist Ashley Greer, whose company Atelier Ashley Flowers worked on the Obamas’ White House Christmas tree, told People magazine the arrangement would have cost up to $US38,000 ($58,500).

She said the arrangement would have used about 1200 roses and at least 1000 other flowers, as well as 360kg or so of greenery, arranged around a six-metre metal dome, which she estimated would have cost up to $US30,000 to assemble.

And besides the roses what other blooms featured? US Better Homes & Gardens broke down the arrangement, identifying white anemones, roses, white allium, hydrangeas, white delphinium, pink trumpet crinum lily and a couple of ranunculus.

Where will they hold the wedding?

Taylor Swift seems pretty chill, so probably Las Vegas or at City Hall. Or, more likely, one of their many properties. Swift has almost as many homes as she does albums, having built up an incredible collection of properties from Nashville to New York City during her legendary career.

While the actual location of the nuptials is anyone’s guess, the smart money says it will likely be in Rhode Island. The state has hosted various celebrity weddings over the years, including those for big names like Jennifer Lawrence and John F. Kennedy.

While Swift has not announced any plans for the nuptials yet, the singer’s love for Rhode Island is no secret – after all, she dedicated an entire song, the last great american dynasty, to her beloved oceanside mansion and its history.

Swift owns an 11,000-square-foot mansion in the Rhode Island neighbourhood of Westerly. She purchased the historic colonial-style home in 2013 for $US17.75 million. The property, built on a bluff overlooking the ocean, is the largest in the area and the location of her famous July 4 parties.

Will there be a pre-nup?

Yup! Or at least, we certainly hope so. After being badly burnt by Scooter Braun in relation to her masters, you’d assume even a loved-up Swift would be savvy enough to make sure everything is in order before walking down the aisle. For the record, Swift’s net worth is around $US1.6 billion, while Kelce’s is a humble $US52 million.

The timing of it all

No doubt Swift fans are already doing some forensic investigating of the announcement, looking for clues. Swift is so meticulous, so in control and so famously coordinated, that the timing of the announcement, coming so soon after news of her next album, feels like a marketing masterstroke.
