Andrew Greene lands at Stokes paper after ABC resignation
Former ABC defence correspondent Andrew Greene is joining Kerry Stokes’ The West Australian newspaper as its national political editor after leaving the public broadcaster this week.
Greene, who started his career in commercial radio, and later joined the Seven Network, will start at The West Australian next month, multiple sources not authorised to speak publicly confirmed to this masthead. He will also serve as the political editor at The Nightly - a digital newspaper launched by Seven West Media in late 2023.
He is expected to work on special projects for Seven, once he has settled into the role. The West’ Australian’s editor-in-chief, Chris Dore, confirmed the appointment and said he was delighted to have Greene joining both outlets.
“He has an exceptional record as a news breaker and a reputation in Canberra as a hugely respected and talented journalist,” Dore told this masthead.
Greene was seated at the Seven West Media table at Canberra’s Midwinter Ball on Wednesday night.
His 15-year tenure at the ABC came to an end this month after a 10-week stand-off between him and the public broadcaster over allegations he accepted a paid work trip to Germany and failed to disclose it.
Greene reported for the ABC’s The World Today about German shipyards and manufacturer ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems earlier this year, before Media Watch revealed the journalist had travelled as a guest of the company, at the time telling his bosses he was on annual leave. His story did not say he was a paid guest of the German company.
After spending more than two months on leave while the ABC investigated the allegations and deliberated over its decision, he resigned on Monday.
At the time of his trip, ThyssenKrupp Marine was competing against the Japanese company, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, to win a major contract to build the next fleet of Australian warships.
Other media, including The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, travelled on the same press junket and disclosed the travel arrangements to readers at the time.
