Upper hand Australia rebound from the canvas on day one to dominate England in a crushing first Test victory at The Gabba with a day to spare. Nobody, and I mean nobody, would have predicted this result after Stuart Broad sparked another top order collapse on day one to have the home side at 6/132. The dismantling of the England batting that ensued will send Australia to the second Test with a soaring mental and technical advantage. England's frailties against top quality pace bowling was brutally exposed.

The key man Mitchell Johnson's selection was met with a national rolling of eyes but he will be entitled to hand out slabs of humble pie. After a wonky first spell, he returned with a searing selection of raw, old-school pace bowling that had England hopping around like rabbits, then dropping like flies. He returned figures of 6/41 and 5/42 to go with hauls of 64 and 39 with the bat. A moral for man of the match and England need a plan - quickly. Johnson should keep the moustache forever.

Big moment With Australia in strife at 6/132 on the first day, the rescue mission mounted by Brad Haddin and Johnson would set up this Test match. Haddin's 94 would help Australia to a first innings total of 295 - well short of what they had hoped for but enough to let Johnson, Harris and Siddle have some loose rein. From there, Australia never looked back.

So England are all out for 179 and Australia win by 381 runs. Mitchell Johnson the man for the home side, finishing with 5/42 to go with his 4/61 in the first innings. The turnaround was dramatic and I doubt anybody on the planet predicted this result at the end of day one. Surely one of the great Ashes comebacks for Australia.

GONE! Johnson gets five and Australia win the first Test of the Ashes series. Anderson pops it up and Johnson takes a simple return catch. What a performance from Australia and that win it in four days to go 1-0 heading to Adelaide.

They can play until 6.30pm local time but every light at the Gabba would have to be turned on and spinners only. Now Watson and Siddle having a crack at Anderson and Clarke finger pointing at Jimmy Anderson! It's heated out there folks.

NEW BALL!

Clarke's just told Anderson to 'get ready for a broken #$%&* arm'. Cop that! Phwoar!

Clarke and Anderson having words there. Anderson complaining now about sledging from Bailey at short leg. Good fun this. And Anderson is yet another Englishman playing one off the hip on the legside. STOP IT.

Root holding Australia at bay here but Anderson is going to have to face a barrage here from Johnson. It's now 5.31pm local time so I'd say there would be about 15 minutes of play for Australia to take this out.

By

Lyon wheeling in again, this time from the other end. Clarke changes his bowlers up and it's working. Surely, surely it won't take long. Run out? Is it? Yes? No? Root is walking but Lyon has dislodged a bail with his forearm before he knocked it over with the ball. NOT OUT and that was a chance gone begging. Anderson was miles out and Lyon could have ripped out all three stumps there.

It's 9/172 and Anderson joins Joe Root at the crease. Do England even want it to go into the session tomorrow? Might be just as well to knock it over tonight hey fellas?
